Safety & Health

For the year ended December 31, 2017
Zero Fatalities
Our main objective was achieved in 2017, keeping our sites Safe Enough For Our Families
reduction in our All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR)
decrease in Potentially Fatal Occurrences (PFOs) compared to 2016
Lost Time Incidents Frequency Rate (LTIFR)

“Safe Enough for Our Families” is the vision that guides our efforts to ensure and support the safety and health of our people at work, at home and in our communities.

We recognize that individuals are ultimately responsible for their own safety, and we strive to equip our employees with the tools, training and behaviours needed for creating a zero-harm workplace. Continual monitoring and evaluation of our safety performance is integral for us to achieve our vision.

Our strategy is underpinned by an integrated approach to risk management. Responsibilities and accountability are embedded in our Sustainability Excellence Management System (SEMS), which requires every Goldcorp operation to implement and monitor safety practices, initiatives and programs.

Health & Safety: Our Priorities

Leadership Engagement and Accountability
Leadership Engagement and Accountability

We provide training on all technical, behavioural and cultural aspects of safety and encourage our people to participate in external training, conferences and workshops to keep them up to date with the latest in safety advancements and innovations, both inside and outside the industry.

Each operating mine develops its own safety programs within our overall vision and framework for coaching, training, workshops and program development. This ensures a successful, sustainable implementation by considering the unique culture at each operation.

Focus on the Highest Risks

Goldcorp’s number one objective is Zero Fatalities, and our vision of making Goldcorp Safe Enough for Our Families is well understood by our employees across all regions of our operations and projects.

We involve all employees in the identification and discussion of safety and health risks and practices. We report and investigate all potential fatal occurrences (any near-miss incident or violation of our life-saving rules that had the potential to result in a fatality), to identify areas of highest risk, share information, learn from each other and make changes based on that information. We also track the All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR) and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR).

Strengthen Safety and Health Systems

Our incident management and investigation systems help us prevent the recurrence of significant events. Our Sustainability Excellence Management System (SEMS) provides the framework for the individual safety and health systems at each operating mine.

We also strive to create and maintain a safe, healthy working environment through the identification, prevention and reduction of exposure risks that can lead to occupational diseases.

Each mine manages its own occupational health program based on site demographics and health risks, which can include monitoring and surveys to characterize exposures to chemical, physical, and biological stressors.

We also coordinate health programs that provide basic medical services through local community and government organizations, and several mines also offer wellness programs for employees, family members and local communities.
