PROJECT SUMMARY

History | Employees

Upper reliance rock facility at Wharf

The mine has been operating successfully since 1983 and has achieved major milestones in health and safety, and progressive reclamation of previously mined areas. The mine’s reserves are projected to be depleted early in 2010 with leaching operations winding down over that year.

As closure draws nearer, Wharf is working closely with the community and all regulatory authorities to ensure the mine is closed in a socially and environmentally sound manner.

Wharf’s vision is to maximize the production potential of the operation over the remaining two to three years while responsibly preparing for closure and rehabilitation to the highest possible standards.

The mine has always maintained a strong environmental focus and, at its own initiative, has rehabilitated old tailings and mining activity from early 1900s to 1950s. As closure draws nearer,

Wharf is continuing its environmental focus to ensure the mine is closed in a socially and environmentally sound manner. Hand-in-hand with this, the mine is working closely with all regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with their requirements.

History

The Bald Mountain Mining District includes both the Portland and Ruby Basin Districts of earlier mining activity.

Production from the Bald Mountain Mining District is estimated at 1,412,900 ounces of gold and 4,327,900 ounces of silver between 1877 and 1959. During this time, gold ore was mined from extensive underground workings.

Wharf Resources independently acquired a land position and initiated exploration in the Annie Creek area in 1979. This work resulted in the definition of a gold deposit which was developed in 1983 as an open pit mine and heap leach recovery operation.

Subsequent exploration programs successfully delineated several ore bodies including Foley Ridge (including East Foley), Juno Cut, The American Eagle, Portland and Trojan. These ore bodies have been mined to completion except Trojan which is currently being mined and which contains the last of the known economic ore reserves.

Employees

The Wharf Mine currently employs 130 full-time employees.  Throughout its 22 year history, the mine has enjoyed the privilege of employees with high core values—who are dedicated, resourceful, and committed to working responsibly.  As the mine life approaches closure, Wharf has implemented a range of programs to ensue that employees  are treated fairly, receive lifestyle advice and guidance, and are rewarded for their years of service.

Wharf employees participate in many civic functions in the surrounding communities that support schools, youth programs and other community groups. Wharf encourages employees in community involvement by offer discount memberships, involving organizations in mine related functions and encouraging and supporting leadership roles in many civic groups.

The company promotes employee and family health by offering discount memberships to various sports and exercise facilities.  Wharf also participates in continuing education through monetary assistance, seminars, on-site training and professional conferences.  The company rewards the employees for professional certifications and trades certifications.
