RED LAKE

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Providing for the safety of personnel and the review and implementation of safe work practices are of the utmost importance to the Red Lake Gold Mines. For those reasons, prior to commencement of work, all employees undergo a site orientation provided by the Safety Group. All Red Lake employees are required to participate in random Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace Testing.

The mine is focused towards achieving zero injuries by integrating systems and influencing behaviours in all activites performed on the property.  This will be achieved through; the development of a long-term safety plan, a systematic approach to on the job training throughtout the property, leadership development, field level risk assesments and an incentive program that rewards employees for working safely.

Behavioral based training is provided to help employees understand “risk” and how to manage risk in their jobs. Safety leadership training is provided for all management to assist them in promoting and supporting the company safety programs.

Both the Red Lake and Campbell Complexes are well prepared to respond to all emergencies. Red Lake’s Mine Rescue teams are trained in the use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus to respond to underground and surface emergencies such as fire fighting, search and rescue, and first aid. In 2003, the Red Lake Complex team won the District Mine Rescue Competition and in 2005, the Campbell Mine Complex won the District Mine Rescue Competition.

On April 27, 2006, the Ontario Mines and Aggregates Safety and Health Association (MASHA) awarded the 140 Goldcorp employees at the Red Lake Mine an “Award of Excellence for Safety” for achieving the lowest total Medical Injury Frequency for a surface operation in Ontario in 2005.

Red Lake has a Spill Response Team that is trained in preventing, containing and cleaning up spill incidents. This involves preventing the spill from going off-site or creating other adverse effects that could put people’s health at risk.

The hands-on training also covers the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), where personnel learn to protect themselves by quickly recognizing and implementing the appropriate levels of response to incidents. The training allows employees to experience spill response strategies and techniques that are likely to afford maximum protection for the health of employees and minimize potential liabilities at the site.

Red Lake Gold Mines strives to maintain a Triple Zero rating (no medical aids – no lost time injuries – no critical or fatal accidents) at its mine sites.
