Musselwhite underground mine in northwestern Ontario, Canada began commercial production on April 1, 1997 and by 2001 had poured its one millionth ounce. Today, cumulative production exceeds 1.7 million ounces. The mine is located on traditional First Nation land, and Musselwhite’s relationships and agreements with the local communities are recognized as best practice.
With existing mineral reserves, Musselwhite has an expected mine life through to 2015. The area also has excellent exploration potential which may further extend the mine life.
Musselwhite is a fly-in operation with pick-up points in Thunder Bay, Pickle Lake and five northern communities. The mine employs approximately 450 employees and contractors. Musselwhite uses First Nation contractors to provide air transportation and camp services.
History
2006 – Exploration drilling completed at 2,430 meter mother hole and two daughter holes on the North Shore of Opapimiskan Lake.
Exploration continues to obtain excellent results form the PQ Deeps and will continue mine development in 2007 in theis area focusing on extending to existing PQ Deeps resources and converting the existing Inferred Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves.
