Community Development
In anticipation of advancement of the project towards production, numerous initiatives were undertaken in 2006 with a range of stakeholders including the Cree Nations of Wemindji and Eastmain, Hydro-Québec, the Québec government, local development agencies, and municipalities.
Some of the initiatives in regard to First Nations include negotiation and signing of short-term employment and transportation service agreements, initiation of discussions on a mutually beneficial long term collaboration agreement, and participation to Wemindji’s annual assembly and discussions on future training. Goldcorp-Opinaca employs a full time Community Affairs Manager in order to further develop its commitment to the local communities.
