Location Map – Property versus actual Road Access
In the summer, fuel and equipment are transported by a barge that navigates the reservoir. A helicopter is stationed permanently on site. It is also possible to access the property by floatplane landing on the reservoir. During winter, fuel and supplies can be transported to site by snowmobile, helicopter and planes landing on ice.
The area is surrounded by extensive hydroelectric facilities and associated infrastructures, the closest such infrastructure, known as La Sarcelle, is located 35 km to the southeast. Cree communities also surround the project with the closest ones being Nemaska to the south, Eastmain to the southwest, and Wemindji to the west.
The region includes many lakes and rivers. The landscape consists of rolling hills with a few hills reaching a maximum elevation of 300m above sea level. The area is drained by the Ell Lake, itself part of the Opinaca reservoir. Vegetation is typical of taiga including areas covered by sparse forest and others devoid of trees; the entire area was burnt by forest fires that occurred a few years ago. In some areas, outcrops are absent due to the abundance of quaternary cover and swamps.
Climate is typical of Northern Canada with average summer temperature ranging from 10 to 25 Celsius during the days to 5 to 15 C at night, between June and September. Winters can be cold with temperature varying from -60 to 10 Celsius. Precipitation varies during the year reaching an average of 2 meters annually.
