Since its discovery in 2004 and prior to its purchase by Goldcorp-Opinaca, 247 drill holes for 86 km of diamond drilling were completed on the property by Virginia Gold Mines. In 2006, Goldcorp completed an additional 245 diamond drill holes for some 76 km of drill core. The 2006 drilling program aimed at better defining the known mineralization and its continuity, while extending the deposit laterally and at depth. To date, more than 70% of the holes drilled within the deposit area reported assay greater than 10 grams of gold per tonne, with intercepted thicknesses varying from 2 to 25 m; the Roberto deposit remains open both along strike and at depth.
In 2007, Goldcorp is continuing its effort of delineation and extension of the deposit with up to 6 drill rigs in operation on the project throughout the year. In addition, condemnation drilling along proposed mine infrastructure will be done. Engineering work that will be completed in 2007 include: advanced environmental studies, geotechnical work, metallurgical sampling and studies, and permanent infrastructure preliminary determination and design.
Other exploration is focusing on defining gold mineralization at vertical depth between 700 and 1000 meters and testing the northern and southern extensions of the deposit. Testing of open pit targets and targets identified by property scale mapping will continue into the fall of 2007.
