COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Goldcorp is committed to building strong, open and transparent relationships with the communities in which it operates.  As such, we understand it is our responsibility to integrate economic, environmental and social dimensions into our business decision-making processes.  We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities and countries where we are located, seeking to improve social and economic circumstances through economic contributions, community involvement, community consultation, support and development of school programs and special events.

Our strategy for advancing as a responsible mining company is to work in partnership with community bodies, government officials and other stakeholders to increase understanding and encourage open, constructive dialogue and trust.  We respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who have an interest in our activities.

Goldcorp is committed to the highest standards of sustainable practices in all we do.  Our objective is to make meaningful contributions to the host communities where we operate and miminze the environmental footprint in those areas.  We are proactive in program development in order for the communities not to be reliant on the mines for their future.

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

Peñasquito – School Drug Awareness Programs

In late November 2007, the Peñasquito project, in Mexico, sponsored a ‘Drugs Awareness Program’ in 12 communities in the Mazapil Municipality. The intent of the program was to raise awareness amongst students and their families of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. The program also helped to train teachers in the early detection of drug abuse. In all, 262 pupils, 137 family members and 21 teachers participated in the program.

San Martin - Supporting their Community

Although now in closure stage, the San Martin mine continues to support the local community with a range of social programs. Local communities also received benefits from the Company through road maintenance, dust suppressing systems, water supply for cattle farming, freshwater supply systems and sewage systems for San Ignacio and Palo Ralo villages.

Education has been a priority, with the building and maintenance of educational facilities and providing teachers for local elementary schools. An important initiative had been the promotion of scholarships to more than 145 local students to attend elementary or high school and graduate school.

Los Filos - Delivering Educational Assistance to Carrizalillo

As part of our commitment to improving local educational facilities in the regions where we work and live, Los Filos has undertaken a number of projects in the Carrizalillo community, including:

  • Provision of scholarships for local pupils;
  • Construction and equipping of a Community Computer Center with access to the internet;
  • Construction of a kindergarten classroom for young children; and
  • Construction of toilet block for the local primary school.

Marlin Mine - Fundación Sierra Madre

Goldcorp’s Marlin mine in Guatemala, along with the Citizen’s Development Corps, has created the Fundación Sierra Madre to initiate sustainable development and capacity building programs in the local communities surrounding the project. The foundation is working with communities, organizations and women’s groups to identify, plan, and implement sustainable economic development initiatives, with the goal of facilitating locally based development that will continue well beyond the life of the mine itself. The foundation has been very active constructing, improving or supporting health clinics, banks, school projects, bridges, and water delivery systems.

Red Lake Mine - Stope School

Goldcorp believes that partnering and engaging with local stakeholders will result in mutually beneficial relationships.  A program was implemented with the First Nations in northern Ontario which will help develop 80 new underground miners over a three year period. A Stope School was started in 2005 to train these new recruits, of which 80% are Local Treaty 3 First Nations. The trainees learn all the activities related to underground mining, and upon successful completion of the twelve week program, obtain the Ontario Common Core Certificate which allows them to be employed at an underground mine. In 2006 the mine trained 31 young adults of which 26 are now employed with Goldcorp. In 2007 the mine trained 22 young adults, 18 are now employed with the Company.
