We seek to improve social and economic circumstances in the communities where we are located through economic contributions, community involvement, community consultation, support and development of school programs and special events.

At every one of our operations, we have invested heavily in local infrastructure. While much of the investment goes into essentials such as roads, bridges, sewage, water and power—critical improvements which benefit all residents, and can trigger local economic growth—we also build schools, health facilities, community centres and much more.

We are proactive in our development of programs and supporting infrastructure, in order to help the communities build diversified economies that are not reliant on the mines for their future.

Case Study: Marlin Mine - Fundación Sierra Madre

Our Marlin mine in Guatemala, along with the Citizen’s Development Corps, has created the Fundación Sierra Madre—the Sierra Madre Foundation. Its mission is to initiate and implement sustainable, community-based development and capacity-building programs in the municipalities of San Miguel Ixtahuacán and Sipacapa.

The Fundación is managed and staffed by Guatemalans and has become an important part of the local community throughout the municipality of San Miguel and in villages in the municipality of Sipacapa. It plays an integral role in building local capacity and promoting economic and community sustainability. The Fundación works with communities, organizations and women’s groups to identify, plan, and implement sustainable economic development initiatives, with the goal of facilitating locally based development that will continue past the life of the mine.

The Fundación has been involved in these infrastructure developments and more:

• more than 100 construction projects including schools, computer labs, recreation halls, sports fields, roads, and improvements to water and sewage systems
• construction and equipping of a community medical centre in San Miguel, complete with medical equipment, examination rooms and two operating rooms (built by Goldcorp in partnership with the Ministry of Health and municipal leaders)
• construction and equipping of vocational classrooms for electrical and automotive mechanical training. Similar resources for studies in tourism and agriculture are in the discussion phase
• The Marlin mine daycare nurtures up to 40 children while their parents (including 120 women) work in and around the mine. Young children benefit from activities, games, exercises, instruction in personal hygiene, medical check-ups and healthy snacks. Mothers attend workshops on nutrition and breastfeeding. Goldcorp pays the salaries for 12 local teachers and support staff, and funds their training in childcare and first aid
