Located in Chihuahua State, Mexico, El Sauzal mine has been a reliable, low cost gold producer and an important foundation for Goldcorp's Mexican operations. During 2014, the remediation process will commence as part of the activities required for the closure of the El Sauzal mine in 2015. The remediation activities in 2014 will focus on contouring of overburden dumps, re-vegetation, and the final placement of dry stacked tailings.
A conventional open-pit mine and mill operation, El Sauzal has proven and probable reserves of 145,850 oz of gold as of December 31, 2013 and had gold production of 80,528 oz in 2013. Over its life El Sauzal mine has produced over 1.7 million ounces of gold at very low cash costs.
Following pit wall instability at the Trini Pit all mining operations were suspended on September 2, 2014 until a geotechnical survey team can assess the potential impact of the instability on the mine's operation. As of August 28, 2014 approximately 37,000 ounces of gold have been produced for 2014.
