At the Marlin mine, all security staff are required to undergo annual training on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and to sign a form indicating that they have received the requisite training and will comply with the Company's human rights requirements. The security contractors include human rights training in their new employee orientation. All security staff receive at least one pre-shift briefing per month on the use of force and firearms. These issues are also reinforced as part of the bi-annual firearms training. Company security supervisors provide ongoing training and refresher classes.

Every security guard proposed for employment at Marlin is screened for allegations of human rights abuses and checked, on the Guatemalan Public Ministry database and the database of the National Human Rights Ombudsman for Guatemala, for documented allegations of human rights violations. While the databases seem to be fairly comprehensive, we are still testing their integrity in regards to tracking allegations of human rights violations. Goldcorp is committed to using reliable information to support our screening processes.

All Marlin security staff are screened on a regular basis and are subject to polygraph testing that includes questions regarding the candidate's involvement in human rights offences. The new contract terms with Marlin's security providers indicate that the contractors will ensure that they vet prospective security staff for human rights abuses before they are presented to the Company. Goldcorp's Office of the Security Director performs additional enquiries as well. Regularly-scheduled Voluntary Principles reviews conducted by third-party experts include assessments of the background checks, training and interviews with the security contractors.

Non-compliance with our human rights provisions is not tolerated. As a result, the Marlin mine replaced one company that felt it would be unable to comply with the terms of the new contract.
