Human Right Assessment
In 2009, at the request of shareholders, Goldcorp became the first mining company to conduct an independent human rights assessment (HRA), which focused on the Marlin Mine, and to make the assessment and its recommendations public. That information is available below.

Marlin Road Block Information – Feb 28, 2011
On Monday, February 28, 2011, a group of approximately 200 individuals reportedly led by opponents of the Marlin Mine blocked three public roads that provide access to the communities of Siete Platos and San Antonio as well as the Marlin Mine. The protestors, who were not members of the local communities, indicated that their purpose was to protest the Government of Guatemala’s failure to suspend operations of the Marlin Mine. The company did not engage with the protestors so as to avoid confrontation and provocation. Below is additional information about the incident.

Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
On June 23, 2010, the Government of Guatemala advised the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) that the Guatemalan Government would initiate the applicable administrative process under the laws of Guatemala to determine if IACHR’s suggested suspension of Marlin operations was warranted. After extensive review of the available data and reports from the responsible governmental ministries, including the Ministries of Environment and Health and Social Welfare, the Government of Guatemala issued a resolution on July 8, 2011 declaring that Marlin Mine is operating in compliance with the law and there is no basis for suspending operation of the mine. The Government’s investigations demonstrate that Marlin Mine has not harmed and is not a threat to harm the environment or the health of the communities in the vicinity of the mine. On July 11, 2011, the Government of Guatemala petitioned the IACHR to declare the precautionary measures to be without further effect. In December 2011, the IACHR requested an amendment to the precautionary measures and the request to suspend operations at Marlin was lifted.

The Story of Marlin

Goldcorp has endeavored to build lasting partnerships with surrounding communities and strengthen families through increased health, economic, educational and social opportunities in the region in which Marlin operates. Of the Marlin Mine's 1,905 workers, 98% are Guatemalan residents.
